Players who find their way to the forums typically have at least a slightly better grounding in the mechanics of the game than the "average" player who picks it up.
I don't use Mass Drivers very much. I do get killed by them. But I don't cry OP, because I've TRIED using them and I've SEEN what it takes to get the kind of kills people get on me with them. I also know others who have skilled into the weapon properly and who have a better grounding in how it works than myself, and I can appreciate that, as deadly as it is against my usual fittings, there are natural threats that it's equally vulnerable against.
One of my characters runs AV quite a lot, while another runs tanks. If I was only looking from the perspective of my relatively-untrained (so far) tank driver, AV looks like it's OP, because a well-fitted Heavy with a Forge Gun can rip my Sica in half with only a couple of shots and it only takes 3 or 4 waves of high-tier Swarm Missiles to kill me. If I look from the perspective of my AV fittings, there have been times where tanks look OP because they can kill me faster than I can charge my Forge Gun or get a lock with my Swarm Launcher.
I don't complain about things being OP when I know there's a good counter. If someone else is complaining, I share the counter(s) I know about with that person so they can try it/them out and see if my advice helps them to defeat their nemesis. Sometimes the counter to a particular tactic requires teamwork, but in most cases, the tactics that need teamwork to beat ALSO need teamwork to succeed in the first place.
If something seems to me like it's legtiimately OP, then I WILL be complaining, because there ARE dangers on the battlefield that, at times, can become overwhelming.
There's been a recent move to request that Scouts get a buff - as a Scout player, I've been OPPOSING that movement, because I feel like Scouts are already truly deadly in the right hands.
But back to the ACTUAL TOPIC here (sorry for the derailment), this isn't a democracy, and it was never meant to be one. The devs have final say. Always. They may not always make the right decisions, but they know what they're doing better than most of us. They don't ONLY count our opinions, although it's nice to see that they ARE listening to the playerbase and we've got a larger-than-usual amount of input on what CCP look at in their games (compared with other game developers). If CCP notice something being discussed on the forums, they have systems in place that allow them to look at the numbers and try to see where those comments are coming from.
If a group of players got together and started crying - totally without foundation - that they were seeing tanks routinely getting destroyed by Scrambler Pistols, and that the weapon was a horribly unfair AV weapon, or that they were being killed at Sniper range by people with Breach Shotguns, even if the majority of the forums were in on it, CCP wouldn't be taking those complaints seriously. When there's something that could legitimately be a problem, they look at it.
The only problem I have is that they're over-nerfing when something is legitimately OP. They turn the best gear from being off the scale broken OP to being equally broken as a useless item. There needs to be a bit more moderation in the approach to balance. Other than that, I'm happy with how the game is being handled, and can honestly say it's significantly better than a lot of developers these days. |
